The Monte-Carlo Casino is in the district of Monte-Carlo of Monaco. Hence how it ultimately received its name. Monaco itself is found along the south-east corner of France, within a region referred to as the French Riviera. Despite being entirely surrounded by France however, Monaco is actually its own Independent Country. The Casino is a property of the Societe des bains de mer de Monaco where the Prince of Monaco have a major interest. The Gambling Palace was built in 1858 by an idea of Princess Caroline (1793-1879) to helps the Family Grimaldi and to avoid the bankrupt. Beautiful the facade. Monaco is a fascinating little place that is definitely worth a trip if you are in the area. At only 2 square kilometers and with only 35,000 residents, it’s no surprise that there are very few hotels and no hostels at all.

If you do want to stay in a hotel in Monaco it’s going to cost you, though a few of them do have rooms that are only a bit higher than similar rooms in nearby France. Food and drinks are also on the pricey side, but not unreasonably so considering everything else.

If you want to see Monaco on a budget then your best bet is to stay in Nice, France, which is only a 25-minute or so train ride away. There are some cheap hotels in Nice, especially if you don’t need to be right near its gravel beach. Then you can take a cheap train ride into Monaco in the morning and head back in the afternoon or evening.

The Reykjavik Casino Club Bar is interesting, and well to be completely honest quiet lonely. We found great humor in the place. We are not gamblers, but as we took a stroll through the downtown area one evening we stumbled across this bar and thought we could stop in for a drink if nothing else. Based on the name and what we saw inside we were unsure as to what the exact purpose of this establishment was. Was it a bar? or a Casino in the heart of Iceland’s capitol?

Casino Club Bar, a bar/ betting pub in downtown Reykjavik

Upon entering this bar in Reykjavik, we found several digital gambling machines, most of which with empty seats. Most of the slot machines had very unique programming. Additionally, there was of course a bar. The drink choices were satisfactory, but not over the top. Which led me to believe that this was more likely casino type establishment. We enjoyed some Viking brew and Wine, and stayed for about an hour to just relax and enjoy the atmosphere. In the hour or so that we were there we played about $20.00 USD in the slots, and won absolutely nothing. Not a single winning pull. We saw two or three others playing constantly, and from the looks of it they were in the same boat as us. Maybe it just wasn’t our night.
