Useful information on Romania
General: Romania (Rumania, Roumania) is a country located in southeastern Europe, North of the Balkan Peninsula, on the Lower Danube, bordering on the Black Sea. Almost all of the Danube Delta is located within its territory. It borders with Hungary and Serbia to the west, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova/Moldavia to the northeast, and Bulgaria to the south. Romania joined NATO on March 29, 2004 and joined the European Union in January 1, 2007. Romania is a Parliamentary Democracy.
Major cities: Romania is divided into 41 counties. The capital city of Romania, and the largest, is Bucharest. The other most important towns in Romania are Constanta (the biggest Romanian harbour), Brasov, Cluj-Napoca , Sibiu, Timisoara and Iasi.
Airports: Romania has 17 civilian airports, out of which currently 10 are served by scheduled international flights. The following are four main international airports:
.. OTP Henri Coanda (Otopeni) Airport, in Bucharest (largest and busiest)
.. BBU Aurel Vlaicu (Baneasa) Airport, in Bucharest (low cost airlines hub)
.. TSR Traian Vuia International (Giarmata) Airport, in Timisoara (second largest in the country)
.. CLJ Cluj-Napoca International (Someseni) Airport, in Cluj-Napoca (largest airport in Transylvania)
Transportation: Romanian cities have fairly good bus services. Cities and towns are linked by extensive rail services. Bucharest has cheap and plentiful public transport provided by underground, bus, and tram. Yellow taxis are also plentiful but make sure prices are listed on the side of the vehicle and that the taxi bears a company name.
Motoring: If you are driving to Romania, on entry you are required to pay a road toll to allow you to use the national roads. Tolls are also charged on motorways and main roads out of town, payable in Euros. It is illegal to drive under the influence of alcohol and the limit is very low. The police carry out frequent checks, and it is essential that you observe the speed limit, ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy and have with you all your car documents including evidence of insurance valid in Romania. When driving, you need to be alert for horse-drawn carts and livestock especially at night. In winter, equip your car for extreme conditions.
Currency: The Romainian Leu (plural Lei, meaning lions) subdivided into 100 Bani (singular Ban) is the legal currency, and is often represented with the symbol L. The old Romanian Leu money with the ISO currency code ROL was replaced by the new Leu money with the new ISO currency code RON in July 2005, at a rate of 10,000:1. The new banknotes and coins are now in circulation. Most shops, restaurants and taxis now show prices only in RON. Romania is expected to adopt the Euro (EUR) in 2014. Romania is largely a 'cash only' economy. It is advisable that you carry Euros as Dollars and Sterling are not always easy to exchange for the local currency especially outside of Bucharest. The exchange rate as of 12 January 2009 is 3.24 RON to one US Dollar, 4.35 RON to one Euro and 4.85 to one GB Pound.
